If somebody was to ask you the question, what is your favourite invention ever? What would be your response? 
Don’t know about you, but I would have great difficulty in answering that Question. I think I might answer the electric guitar but I Might well says the internal combustion engine and its use in the complex machine known as the Auto car. I particularly mention the internal combustion engine, because without it the iconic cars of the past and present simply wouldn’t be the same. Could the Jaguar E type have been the same with an electric engine? I certainly don’t think so. I am sure a Rolls Royce could be just as Quiet and Luxurious but there was always something really special about the purring of those in-line cylinders that was music to the driver’s ears. I bet you If you were to poll a cross section of society as a whole I bet the Car would come out somewhere near, if not the top, of any such poll. Without life would not be the same It has opened up the lives of millions around the world and the daily workhorse of humanity everywhere.
The car has become so successful that its future has now come under threat, because of a number of problems. The first of these problems is that of congestion. Go to any city centre anywhere in the world and it’s the same story. Traffic jam after traffic jam. Town planners are beginning to ban cars from city centres and introducing Park and ride schemes. And any number of schemes to reduce car use. Another problem is the massive amounts of toxic fumes that are emitted on a daily basis in city centres and along major highways. Personally I don’t believe in Global warming, but even I understand the need to reduce this danger to health. Yes catalytic converters are effective for a while but these don’t last very long. And of course as the cost of oil continues to climb then the internal combustion engine will maybe become obsolete.
Anyway no matter what the future of the car may be, perhaps today the biggest downside of the car is the frightening accident statistics. I’m sure that we all feel helpless to do anything about the above problems not least the accident statistics. However I do believe that you should be aware of what action to take should you be involved in an accident yourself.
